Cartier Santos Black ADLC Steel WSSA0039 — the Santos in stealth

The Santos de Cartier has a longer history than almost any other wristwatch in production. In 1904, Louis Cartier granted the wish of the famous Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont: to be able to read the time while flying. The result — one of the first true wristwatches — established the Santos’s square case, exposed screws, and integrated bracelet as a template that has never needed reinvention.

The WSSA0039 is what happens when that template is taken somewhere darker. The ADLC coating applied to the steel case and bezel creates a fully blacked-out execution of the large Santos — monochromatic, architectural, and more aggressive in presence than the standard steel version, while retaining the square geometry and exposed screw details that define the Santos identity. The black dial, black ADLC-coated case, black sword-shaped hands, and black synthetic spinel crown produce a watch that reads as one unified dark surface, with the exposed screws and the square silhouette doing all the visual work.

It is the Santos for buyers who find the standard steel version too conventional.

The ADLC coating — what it is and why it matters

ADLC stands for Amorphous Diamond-Like Carbon — a coating technology that applies a layer of carbon in an amorphous (non-crystalline) structure to the steel surface. The result is a surface that is harder than standard steel, highly resistant to scratching, and uniformly matte-black in appearance. Unlike PVD or DLC coatings applied to other watches, ADLC at Cartier’s specification is dense, durable, and produces the specific flat black surface that gives the WSSA0039 its identity.

The ADLC covers the case and bezel entirely. Combined with the black dial and black hands, the watch has no reflective surface to catch — it absorbs light rather than returning it.

2026 Cartier service — the strongest condition assurance available

This example comes with a Cartier service receipt dated 2026 — a document that many pre-owned Santos listings cannot offer. A Cartier maison service means the watch has been assessed, serviced, and returned to Cartier’s own standards by Cartier’s own watchmakers. The ADLC case and components have been inspected. The water resistance has been tested.

For a buyer purchasing remotely or physicaly, a dated Cartier service receipt eliminates the primary uncertainty of pre-owned watch buying: whether the movement is running correctly and whether the watch has been properly maintained. It is, in practical terms, a documented chain of custody from Cartier to this listing.

The QuickSwitch system

QuickSwitch enables instant tool-free swaps between the rubber strap and the black alligator leather strap, both fitted with an interchangeable steel deployant buckle. The system uses a lever mechanism integrated into the lug that releases the strap without requiring a spring bar tool. In practical use, the WSSA0039 on the rubber strap is a sports and casual piece; on the alligator leather it reads as a dress watch. Both configurations sit within the same ADLC case aesthetic — the change is in register, not in character.

FAQs

Is this Cartier Santos WSSA0039 available in Australia? Yes. This 2023 Cartier Santos Large ADLC WSSA0039 is held in Perth by Calibre24 and ships fully insured across Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Adelaide. Viewings by appointment in Perth.

What is the Cartier Santos WSSA0039? The WSSA0039 is the large-model Santos de Cartier in steel and ADLC — the all-black blacked-out version of Cartier’s square-case wristwatch. It has a 39.8mm case coated in Amorphous Diamond-Like Carbon (ADLC) for a matte-black surface harder than standard steel, a black dial with luminescent sword-shaped hands and Roman numeral markers, and Cartier’s Calibre 1847 MC automatic movement. It comes with two interchangeable straps — rubber and black alligator leather — both compatible with the QuickSwitch tool-free strap-change system.

What is ADLC and how does it differ from PVD or DLC? ADLC stands for Amorphous Diamond-Like Carbon — a specific variant of diamond-like carbon coating where the carbon is deposited in a non-crystalline (amorphous) structure. Compared to standard PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) black coatings, ADLC is denser, harder, and more resistant to scratching. It produces a distinctively flat matte-black surface rather than the slightly glossier appearance of many PVD or DLC treatments. On the WSSA0039, the ADLC covers the case and bezel, creating a uniformly dark surface that does not reflect light in the way polished or even brushed steel does.

What does the 2026 Cartier service receipt mean for a buyer? A Cartier service receipt dated 2026 confirms the watch was assessed and serviced by Cartier’s own watchmakers during that calendar year — not by an independent watchmaker, but by the maison itself. This means the Calibre 1847 MC movement has been cleaned, lubricated, and regulated to Cartier’s own specifications, and the watch has been inspected for any case or component issues. For a pre-owned buyer, this is the strongest possible assurance of movement condition and maintenance history short of a new purchase. It eliminates the primary unknown of buying pre-owned: whether the movement has been cared for.

What is the QuickSwitch system on the Cartier Santos? QuickSwitch is Cartier’s tool-free strap interchangeability system, integrated into the Santos lug design. A lever on the underside of each lug releases the strap without requiring a spring bar tool or watchmaker intervention. Both the rubber and alligator leather straps included with the WSSA0039 are QuickSwitch compatible and use the same interchangeable steel deployant buckle — the transition from sport to dress configuration takes seconds.

What is the difference between the Cartier Santos large and medium ADLC? The large Santos ADLC (WSSA0039) measures 39.8mm in case width. The medium Santos ADLC is 35.1mm. Both use the same ADLC coating and Calibre 1847 MC movement, and both come with QuickSwitch rubber and leather straps. The large is the standard men’s size and the most collected configuration; the medium is a smaller fit suitable for buyers preferring a 35mm case on the wrist.

What is the history of the Cartier Santos? The Santos de Cartier is one of the oldest wristwatch designs still in continuous production. In 1904, Louis Cartier created a wristwatch for his friend Alberto Santos-Dumont, the Brazilian aviation pioneer who needed to read the time while piloting. That original watch established the Santos’s defining features — a square case with visible screws on the bezel, integrated bracelet, rounded angles — which remain unchanged in the current collection. The Santos predates the modern luxury sports watch category by decades, and its square case with exposed screws directly influenced the design language of the entire category.

Does this Cartier Santos come with box and papers? Yes — complete full set with original Cartier inner and outer boxes, papers, and documentation. A 2026 Cartier service receipt is also included.

Can I sell or trade in my Cartier or other luxury watch? Yes. Calibre24 buys and takes consignment on Cartier, Rolex, and other high-end references. Contact us for a current valuation.
