Richard Mille's pricing is a function of how the watches are made: aerospace materials, machined in tiny volumes, to tolerances that most of the industry never attempts.
The case is three separate plates — bezel, caseband, back — bolted together with grade 5 titanium spline screws seated in 316L stainless washers. A single case takes hours of machining and dozens of individual operations.
Hundreds of carbon or silica filament layers, each around 30 microns, laid at shifting angles and cured under heat and pressure. Milling cuts through the stack, so the striated pattern on every case is unrepeatable.
Baseplates and bridges are cut from grade 5 titanium rather than brass, then hollowed until only the load paths remain. Each one is finite-element tested before it is approved for production.
RM's tourbillons have been worn through professional tennis and Formula 1. Movements are suspended on cables or splined mounts specifically so the watch tolerates forces that would stop a conventional calibre.
A pusher in the crown steps between winding, neutral and hand-setting, with the selected mode displayed on the dial. Torque-limiting crowns stop the mainspring being over-wound by force.
Annual output sits in the low thousands across the entire catalogue, and distribution runs only through Richard Mille's own boutiques. Demand routinely exceeds allocation, which is what sustains secondary-market pricing.
