Rolex Datejust 36 Bright Blue Dial 126234

The Datejust 36 — Where the Modern Watch Began

Introduced in 1945 to mark Rolex’s 40th anniversary, the Datejust was the first self-winding waterproof wristwatch in the world to display the date automatically through a window in the dial. More than eighty years later, the reference 126234 carries that same DNA in a case sized at 36mm — generous enough to read clearly, disciplined enough to wear under a shirt cuff or alongside a bracelet. It is the watch that taught the world what a luxury sports-dress timepiece should be.

White Rolesor — Two Metals, One Intent

White Rolesor is Rolex’s term for the pairing of Oystersteel (their proprietary 904L stainless steel, more corrosion-resistant than industry-standard 316L) with 18-karat white gold. On the 126234, white gold is reserved for the fluted bezel. The result is a watch that reads as precious without crossing into ostentation.

The Fluted Bezel — 18k White Gold

This is the detail that sets the 126234 apart from the smooth-bezel Datejust 36. The fluted bezel is machined from solid 18-karat white gold and engine-turned by hand into its signature ribbed pattern. The technique dates to Rolex’s earliest dials; the bezel on a modern 126234 is machined with the same intent but to finer tolerances than any era before.

Blue Sunray Dial — Depth in Daylight

The blue dial is finished in sunray lacquer, a radial brushing technique that creates a depth of colour that changes character as the light shifts — near-navy in shadow, electric under direct light. Applied hour markers in white gold sit flush against the surface, and the date window at three o’clock is magnified 2.5× by the Cyclops lens above the sapphire crystal. The printing is in crisp white, consistent with Rolex’s in-house dial manufacturing standards.

Calibre 3235 — Rolex’s Flagship Manufacture Movement

Under the dial, the self-winding Calibre 3235 represents Rolex’s state-of-the-art in time-only movements. Key advances over earlier Datejust calibres include:

  • Chronergy escapement: A redesigned lever-and-escape-wheel geometry that improves energy efficiency by approximately 15% over the previous Calibre 3135, while being less sensitive to magnetic fields.
  • Parachrom Blue hairspring: Made in-house from a paramagnetic alloy, up to 10× more resistant to magnetic interference than a traditional steel spring, and more stable across temperature variations.
  • Paraflex shock absorbers: Rolex’s proprietary shock absorption system, offering approximately 50% more resistance to shock than a conventional spring bar system.
  • ~70-hour power reserve: Approximately 70 hours of reserve from full wind — nearly three days, versus the ~48 hours of the older Calibre 3135.
  • Superlative Chronometer: Certified COSC as a chronometer, then tested again by Rolex after casing to a stricter standard: −2/+2 seconds per day. Each watch ships with Rolex’s red seal confirming this certification.
Jubilee Bracelet — The Original Datejust Companion

The Jubilee bracelet was introduced alongside the Datejust in 1945 and remains its most historically faithful pairing. The five-link construction gives the Jubilee its distinctive look and its famously supple drape on the wrist. The Folding Oysterclasp closes securely; the integrated Easylink system allows a 5mm adjustment of bracelet length without tools, accommodating wrist size changes through the day or across seasons.

FAQs

What is the reference number for this Rolex Datejust 36? The reference number is 126234. This generation of Datejust 36 was introduced in 2021, replacing the earlier 116234. Key updates included the new Calibre 3235 movement (with ~70hr power reserve and Chronergy escapement), updated Jubilee bracelet, and refined case proportions. The 126234 is available with various dial and bezel combinations; this example features the blue sunray dial with fluted 18k white gold bezel on the Jubilee bracelet — the White Rolesor configuration.

Is the fluted bezel on this Datejust 36 ceramic or gold? It is solid 18-karat white gold — not ceramic, not plated, not coated. The fluted bezel on the Datejust 36 126234 has always been a precious-metal component; Rolex uses Cerachrom ceramic only on its dedicated sports models (Submariner, GMT-Master II, Daytona). The white gold bezel is engine-turned by hand into its ribbed pattern and will retain its finish and lustre for the life of the watch.

What is White Rolesor? White Rolesor is Rolex’s trademarked name for the combination of Oystersteel (Rolex’s 904L stainless steel) with 18-karat white gold. On the Datejust 36 126234, white gold appears on the fluted bezel.

What movement does the Rolex Datejust 36 126234 use? The 126234 runs Rolex’s Calibre 3235 — the current-generation flagship movement for time-and-date Datejust references. It features the in-house Chronergy escapement (approximately 15% more energy-efficient than the previous Calibre 3135), a Parachrom Blue hairspring (paramagnetic, 10× more resistant to magnetism than steel), Paraflex shock absorption, and approximately 70 hours of power reserve. It holds Rolex’s Superlative Chronometer rating: certified COSC, then re-tested by Rolex after casing to −2/+2 seconds per day.

How does the Jubilee bracelet differ from the Oyster bracelet on the Datejust 36? The Jubilee is a five-link bracelet that drapes more flexibly on the wrist and has a narrower, more jewellery-like appearance. It has been paired with the Datejust since 1945 and is considered the historically correct pairing. The Oyster bracelet is a three-link design with a wider, more sportif look and feel. Both are available on the 126234; this example comes on the Jubilee with the Folding Oysterclasp and Easylink 5mm extension.

Is this Datejust 36 brand new? Yes. This watch is brand new and unworn — no previous owner, no service history, no polishing. It comes with the full 2026 Rolex set including inner and outer box, green warranty card, and Superlative Chronometer certificate, which initiates Rolex’s five-year international guarantee from date of purchase.

Does the Rolex Datejust 36 have a date function? Yes. The date is displayed in an aperture at the three o’clock position and is magnified 2.5× by the Cyclops lens built into the sapphire crystal. The date changes instantly at midnight via Rolex’s patented instantaneous-change mechanism — not a gradual creep. The Calibre 3235 also features a quick-set date function, allowing the date to be set independently of the hour hand without cycling through a 12-hour rotation.
