Toledano & Chan B/1 Blue Lapis Lazuli – The Watch Collector’s Watch

Phil Toledano launched Toledano & Chan with a simple premise: make the watch he actually wanted to wear. As the photographer behind A Shadow Fell Across the Dial and one of the more outspoken voices in contemporary watch culture — known widely as “Mr. Enthusiast” — Toledano brought genuine obsessive energy to the project, partnering with watch designer Alfred Chan to translate that vision into steel and stone. The result was the B/1: a brutalist, architecture-led timepiece that refused to look like anything else on the market.

The Breuer Building: A Watch Built From Architecture

The B/1 case is not round — and that is precisely the point. Toledano & Chan drew directly from Marcel Breuer’s 1966 Whitney Museum of American Art (now the Met Breuer) in New York: a building defined by its asymmetric trapezoidal window, cantilevered mass, and bold, unapologetic geometry. The watch translates those proportions into 904L stainless steel, the same grade used by Rolex for its corrosion resistance. At 33.5 mm across and just 10.4 mm thick (tapering to 9.1 mm at the edges), the case sits with surprising wrist presence for its dimensions, its multiple faceted planes catching and redirecting light from every angle. The crown sits at the left of the case in a destro configuration — unconventional, intentional, and immediately recognisable.

Blue Lapis Lazuli: No Two Alike

The dial is the centrepiece. Cut from natural blue lapis lazuli — the same intensely chromatic stone used in Egyptian pharaoh masks and Renaissance ultramarine pigment — it carries a depth of colour that no lacquer or PVD finish can reproduce. The natural matrix of pyrite flecks and white calcite veining means that every B/1 lapis dial is unique; yours differs from every other in the edition. There are no applied indices, no printed brand name, no chapter ring. The stone is allowed to exist completely on its own terms, the silver-tone dauphine hands offering just enough legibility against the blue. Lapis lazuli is not a compromise dial material; it is the statement.

Sold Out in an Edition of 175

Toledano & Chan produced exactly 175 numbered examples of the B/1 Blue Lapis Lazuli. The edition has been sold out at source since its release in 2024. Finding one in the secondary market — in mint condition, with its original box and fully linked bracelet — is a genuine opportunity for a collector who missed the initial release. The combination of sold-out status, natural stone uniqueness, and a brand that has already built a credible reputation with serious enthusiasts means the scarcity here is structural, not manufactured.

Movement & Bracelet

The Sellita SW100 automatic movement is a Swiss-made, 25-jewel calibre running at 28,800 vph with a 42-hour power reserve and bidirectional rotor winding. Hacking seconds and hand-winding are both supported. The bracelet is the integrated faceted steel design developed specifically for the B/1 — parallel H-links with complex faceting that mirrors the case geometry — and this example is fully linked, meaning all bracelet links are present for maximum fit flexibility across a range of wrist sizes.

Condition & Box

The watch itself is in Mint condition. The watch comes with its original Toledano & Chan concrete presentation box, which has sustained damage in storage — please refer to the photographs for a clear view of the affected area. The damage is to the box only; the watch is entirely unaffected. The price reflects the complete, transparent picture.

FAQs

Q: How many Toledano & Chan B/1 Blue Lapis Lazuli watches were made? A: Exactly 175 numbered pieces. The edition is permanently sold out at source. Calibre24’s listing represents one of the relatively few opportunities to acquire a mint example on the secondary market.

Q: What makes the B/1 lapis lazuli dial unique? A: The dial is cut from natural blue lapis lazuli stone. Every piece of lapis carries its own pattern of pyrite flecks, white calcite veining, and colour variation — no two dials are identical. Unlike a painted or lacquered dial, the lapis lazuli changes subtly under different lighting and is inherently one-of-a-kind. There are no applied indices or brand markings on the dial; the stone is presented completely uninterrupted.

Q: What is the design inspiration behind the Toledano & Chan B/1? A: The B/1 draws directly from the Brutalist architecture of Marcel Breuer’s Whitney Museum of American Art (now the Met Breuer) in New York — specifically the building’s asymmetric trapezoidal window and cantilevered concrete form. The watch’s asymmetric case, sharp faceted planes, and left-side crown position are all deliberate architectural references. Toledano & Chan describes the design approach as “architecture-driven watchmaking.”

Q: Who founded Toledano & Chan? A: The brand was founded by Phil Toledano — photographer and watch writer widely known online as “Mr. Enthusiast” — and Alfred Chan, a professional watch designer. Toledano brought the collector’s perspective and Chan the design expertise. The collaboration is focused on small-batch, design-led watches rather than mainstream production.

Q: What movement does the Toledano & Chan B/1 use? A: The B/1 is powered by the Sellita SW100 — a Swiss-made automatic calibre with 25 jewels, 28,800 vph beat rate, bidirectional rotor winding, Incabloc shock protection, and a 42-hour power reserve. The movement supports hand-winding and hacking seconds.

Q: What does “fully linked” mean for the B/1 bracelet? A: It means the bracelet is complete — all original links are present and included with the watch. This is important for the B/1 because the integrated bracelet is a core part of the design. Having all links means the bracelet can be sized to virtually any wrist without being short of material; a buyer who needs a larger size retains that option.

Q: Is there anything wrong with this watch? A: The watch itself is in mint condition. The original Toledano & Chan concrete presentation box has sustained minor damage in storage; please review the photographs for a clear and honest view of the affected area. The watch is unaffected. The price has been set with full transparency about the box condition.

Q: Is the Toledano & Chan B/1 a good investment? A: As a sold-out limited edition from a brand with a growing collector following, the B/1 lapis lazuli carries genuine secondary market scarcity. Calibre24 cannot offer investment advice, but the structural factors — fixed edition of 175, natural stone material, sold-out status, and a founder with a credible voice in the watch community — are the kind of attributes collectors typically look for in a piece with long-term interest. The best reason to buy it remains that it is exceptional to wear and own.

Q: Can I see this watch in person in Perth? A: Yes. Calibre24 is based in Perth, Western Australia. Contact us to arrange a viewing.
