The AP Royal Oak Offshore 26420CE, Full Ceramic, Mint, With Warranty

The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore 26420CE is not a subtle watch. At 43mm in a full ceramic construction — black ceramic case, blue ceramic bezel, eight hexagonal screws — it is architecturally imposing in a way that remains entirely coherent. The Royal Oak DNA is unmistakable: the octagonal bezel, the Méga Tapisserie dial, the integrated strap. But in ceramic, every element reads with a permanence and depth that metal cannot replicate. This is the Offshore as architectural object.

This example is Mint condition, full set, 2024, with the AP manufacturer’s warranty — an exceptional addition of remaining guarantee on a watch that retails new in Australia for $103,500. We are offering it at $68,995 — a saving of 34% off the AU retail price. For a mint AP Royal Oak Offshore in ceramic with remaining warranty, that is a genuinely exceptional entry point.

Blue Ceramic: Why It Matters

Ceramic as a watchcase material is not new, but it remains rare at this level of complication. The 26420CE uses a black ceramic case body combined with a blue ceramic bezel — a two-tone approach that gives the watch colour depth without sacrificing the tactile density of an all-ceramic construction. Ceramic is harder than steel on the Mohs scale, essentially scratch-proof under everyday conditions, chemically inert to skin oils and sweat, and maintains its surface finish with a permanence that polished steel cannot approach. The blue Cerachrom-class bezel holds its colour without fading under UV exposure — a limitation of anodised aluminium inserts on lesser sport watches.

The eight hexagonal screws securing the bezel are AP’s signature architectural element, carried from the original Royal Oak (designed by Gérald Genta in 1972) through to the Offshore and every Royal Oak derivative since. On the 26420CE, those screws are set into blue ceramic — a detail that rewards close inspection and photographs exceptionally under studio lighting.

Flyback Chronograph: What Separates Cal. 4401

The 26420CE is powered by Calibre 4401, Audemars Piguet’s in-house manufacture flyback chronograph movement — and the word “flyback” matters here. A standard chronograph requires three operations to restart: stop, reset, start. A flyback chronograph collapses this into a single pusher press: at any moment, pressing the lower pusher simultaneously stops the running chronograph, resets it to zero, and immediately restarts it. For a pilot timing sequential laps or a navigator recording successive time intervals, the difference is not trivial.

The 4401 achieves the flyback function via a column wheel — the precision control mechanism preferred by haute horlogerie over the simpler cam-lever system used in entry-level chronographs. The column wheel provides smoother, more positive actuation of the start/stop and flyback functions, with less pressure required at the pushers. It also contributes to movement longevity by reducing friction in the chronograph control train. At 28,800 vph (4 Hz) across 40 jewels with approximately 70 hours of power reserve, the 4401 is a substantial in-house manufacture movement — not an outsourced ebauche but a movement designed, produced, and finished at AP’s Le Brassus manufacture. The sapphire exhibition caseback provides a full view of its decoration and architecture.

The chronograph sub-dial layout follows the standard AP Offshore arrangement: elapsed minutes at 9 o’clock, elapsed hours at 3 o’clock, running seconds at 6 o’clock. The date appears between 4 and 5 o’clock. A tachymeter scale on the black inner bezel ring allows average speed calculation over a measured distance.

Méga Tapisserie Dial: Smoked Blue

The dial is finished in AP’s proprietary Méga Tapisserie pattern — a larger-scale guilloché grid compared with the classic “Petite Tapisserie” of the standard Royal Oak. On the 26420CE, the dial is executed in a smoked blue gradient: intensely blue at the centre, deepening to near-black at the outer edges. The gradient is a function of the dial finishing process — the colour is applied in a way that naturally fades outward, creating a tonal depth that changes with the angle of light. At certain angles the dial reads blue; at others, almost charcoal. The three black sub-dials provide contrast against the blue Méga Tapisserie ground, with thin silver chapter rings defining each counter’s boundary.

White gold applied hour markers sit at each hour position with luminescent fill; the Royal Oak hands are also white gold with luminescent coating. The combination of deep blue dial, white gold hardware, and black counters is one of the most photographically striking dial configurations in AP’s current ceramic Offshore lineup.

Case Architecture and Dimensions

The case measures 43mm in diameter and 14.4mm in thickness — substantial dimensions that position the 26420CE firmly in the sport-luxury category rather than the dress-watch segment. The black ceramic case body is fitted with a sapphire exhibition caseback, secured with the same multi-screw architecture as the bezel. The crown is blue ceramic, screw-locked against the case at 10 o’clock in the traditional Offshore crown position. Water resistance is 100 metres (10 ATM) — appropriate for water sports, rain, and swimming, though not rated for professional diving.

Interchangeable Strap System and AP Warranty

The 26420CE ships with AP’s interchangeable strap system: the strap attaches to the case without tools via a quick-release mechanism, allowing the wearer to swap between the included blue calfskin strap (textile-effect finish, blue stitching, titanium AP pin buckle) and an additional black rubber strap in seconds. Both are included in the full set. The interchangeable system means future strap purchases — additional leather, rubber, or fabric options available from AP — can be installed at home without returning the watch to a retailer.

This example carries the AP manufacturer’s warranty until late 2029 — a full five years of remaining coverage from Audemars Piguet. This provides the same protection a buyer would receive purchasing new from an authorised dealer today, at a fraction of the retail price. AP’s warranty covers movement defects and manufacturing faults; it is transferable to the new owner.

FAQs

Q: What is the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore 26420CE? A: The 26420CE is the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Flyback Chronograph in a full ceramic construction — black ceramic case and blue ceramic bezel. It is 43mm, powered by the in-house Calibre 4401 with a flyback chronograph function and column wheel, and features a smoked blue Méga Tapisserie gradient dial. It is part of the second generation of ceramic Royal Oak Offshores introduced in the early 2020s, distinguished by the blue-and-black two-tone ceramic configuration and AP’s interchangeable strap system.

Q: What is a flyback chronograph and how is the AP 26420CE different from a standard chronograph? A: A standard chronograph requires three separate pusher presses to restart: stop the counter, reset it to zero, then start it again. A flyback chronograph collapses this into one press of the lower pusher — it stops, resets, and immediately restarts the chronograph in a single action. This was originally developed for aviation timekeeping, where pilots need to record successive intervals without losing time between measurements. The AP Calibre 4401 uses a column wheel to control the flyback function, which provides more precise and consistent actuation than simpler cam-lever mechanisms.

Q: Why is the Royal Oak Offshore 26420CE made in ceramic? A: Ceramic offers properties that metal cannot replicate: it is harder than steel on the Mohs scale (essentially scratch-proof under everyday wear), chemically inert to skin oils and perspiration, UV-stable (colour does not fade under sunlight), and maintains its surface finish permanently. For a watch as architecturally prominent as the Royal Oak Offshore, ceramic also provides a visual depth and density that sets it apart from conventional steel or titanium references. The black ceramic case paired with the blue ceramic bezel creates a two-tone combination that reads as both bold and refined — distinctive without being decorative.

Q: What is the Méga Tapisserie dial pattern? A: Méga Tapisserie is Audemars Piguet’s proprietary guilloché dial pattern — a machined grid of raised squares that catches and reflects light across the dial surface. It is a larger-scale variant of the “Petite Tapisserie” found on the standard Royal Oak. On the 26420CE, the Méga Tapisserie is executed with a smoked blue gradient finish — intensely blue at the centre, deepening to near-black toward the edges — giving the dial an appearance that shifts tonally under different lighting conditions. The pattern is unique to the Royal Oak family and is one of the most recognisable dial signatures in watchmaking.

Q: Does the AP Royal Oak Offshore 26420CE come with a rubber strap? A: Yes. The 26420CE ships with AP’s interchangeable strap system, which includes both a blue calfskin strap (textile-effect finish) and an additional black rubber strap. Both attach and detach without tools via the quick-release mechanism on the case lugs. Additional strap options — in various leathers, rubber, and fabric — are available through Audemars Piguet boutiques and can be installed at home.

Q: What is Audemars Piguet Calibre 4401? A: The Calibre 4401 is Audemars Piguet’s in-house manufacture flyback chronograph movement, produced at the AP manufacture in Le Brassus, Switzerland. It operates at 28,800 vph (4 Hz) with 40 jewels, 381 components, and approximately 70 hours of power reserve. The flyback function is controlled by a column wheel positioned at 7:30 — a preferred architecture in haute horlogerie for its precision and reduced friction. The movement is visible through the sapphire exhibition caseback and is finished to the standards expected of a Swiss manufacture movement at this price point.

Q: Does this AP Royal Oak Offshore come with a manufacturer’s warranty? A: Yes — this 2024 example carries the Audemars Piguet manufacturer’s warranty, which remains valid until late 2029. This provides the same coverage that a buyer would receive purchasing a new watch from an authorised AP dealer today — without the waitlist or the full retail price. The warranty covers movement defects and manufacturing faults and is transferable to the new owner.

Q: Why is this AP Royal Oak Offshore priced below retail? A: This is a pre-owned example in mint condition, purchased in 2024 and offered through calibre24.com.au, Perth’s specialist in pre-owned luxury timepieces. The difference between pre-owned and new Audemars Piguet pricing reflects the secondary market dynamic rather than any issue with the watch — the condition is mint, the set is complete, and the AP warranty runs until late 2029. The saving on AU retail represents the discount the market applies to a watch that has changed hands once, regardless of its physical condition. For a buyer who values condition and warranty coverage over purchasing through an authorised dealer, this is an exceptional opportunity.
