The IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 IW328901 — Gérald Genta’s design returns for 2023

The IWC Ingenieur is one of the oldest lines in Swiss watchmaking dedicated to anti-magnetic protection. The original Ingenieur launched in the 1950s as a tool watch built for engineers, scientists, and medical professionals working in environments where magnetic fields could stop a conventional mechanical watch. The soft-iron inner case that shields the movement from magnetic fields remains part of every current Ingenieur — it is not a heritage detail but a functional specification carried unchanged from the first generation.

The 2023 relaunch of the Ingenieur Automatic 40 is significant because it returns to the design that defines the reference in collector memory: the Ingenieur SL of 1974–1976, commissioned from Gérald Genta. IWC asked Genta — already responsible for the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak (1972) and the Patek Philippe Nautilus (1976), which makes him the most consequential watch designer of the twentieth century — to modernise the Ingenieur. He delivered the ref. 1832, a 38mm integrated-bracelet sports watch with a distinctive cross-hatched guilloche dial, exposed bezel screws, and a bracelet that merged into the case without conventional lugs. Fewer than 600 examples of the automatic ref. 1832 were produced, which makes the original genuinely rare. The design was never replaced in spirit, only set aside.

The 2023 Ingenieur Automatic 40 is the faithful revival IWC should have produced decades earlier. The cross-hatched guilloche dial pattern is retained directly. The five exposed bezel screws are retained, now standardised with one at 12 o’clock and two on each side — addressing a known inconsistency in the original. The case grows to 40mm but thins substantially to 10.7mm, making it considerably more wearable than the 14mm-thick original SL. The integrated H-link bracelet is engineered with a new middle-link attachment system. The anti-magnetic soft-iron inner case remains. The 2023 Ingenieur was, by broad consensus, one of the most significant IWC releases at Watches and Wonders 2023.

IW328901 — the black dial and the fully brushed bracelet

Within the IW3289 family, the IW328901 is the black dial reference in stainless steel — and it carries a specific bracelet finishing that sets it apart from other variants in the range.

The black guilloche dial delivers Genta’s cross-hatch pattern in its most architectural expression. Against the black surface, the fine guilloche texture creates a depth and play of light that changes with viewing angle — more visible and more dimensional than the same pattern in lighter dial colours. The baton indices and stick hands carry Super-LumiNova X1 luminescence. The date display sits at 3 o’clock with a colour-matched date wheel.

The bracelet on the IW328901 is fully brushed throughout, including the centre links. This is a meaningful distinction within the IW3289 range: other variants — including the aqua dial — are fitted with polished centre links against brushed outer links, giving them a two-tone bracelet finish that reads more formally. The black dial’s fully brushed bracelet is consistent with the more tool-watch, sports-instrument character of the configuration — a single brushed surface from end to end, matched to the stealth aesthetic of the black dial. For buyers who prefer a unified, non-reflective bracelet finish, the IW328901 is the reference to seek out.

Calibre 32111 — IWC’s current Ingenieur movement

The Calibre 32111 was developed and manufactured with ValFleurier and represents one of IWC’s most technically substantial in-house automatic movements. The headline figure is the 120-hour power reserve — five full days — delivered at a 28,800 vph operating frequency with 21 jewels across 164 components.

The Pellaton winding system with ceramic components is the movement’s most significant engineering feature. The Pellaton is IWC’s proprietary bidirectional pawl-winding mechanism, developed in the mid-twentieth century and progressively refined. In the Calibre 32111, the winding pawls are ceramic — IWC’s first calibre to use silicon components in this mechanism — which reduces friction and wear compared to conventional metal pawls, extending the winding system’s service life and improving winding efficiency.

The movement sits inside a soft-iron inner case that screens it from magnetic interference — the functional continuation of the Ingenieur’s original purpose as a tool watch for technical professionals. The caseback carries IWC’s signature engraving, and the skeletonised rotor is visible through a display caseback option on titanium variants; the stainless steel IW328901 uses a solid caseback.

Condition

Mint.

Box note: The IWC presentation box has a minor cosmetic defect — the snap button has come away from the casing of the box. This does not affect the watch in any way. The watch, inner tray, papers, and all accessories are complete and undamaged. The defect is shown in the listing photos. The watch is priced accordingly and represents excellent value against the AU$20,300 Australian retail price.

FAQs

What is the IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 IW328901? The IW328901 is the black dial variant of IWC’s 2023 Ingenieur Automatic 40 — a direct revival of Gérald Genta’s 1976 Ingenieur SL (ref. 1832). It features a 40mm stainless steel case with five exposed bezel screws, a black guilloche dial, IWC Calibre 32111 in-house automatic with 120-hour power reserve, and a fully brushed integrated H-link stainless steel bracelet. Anti-magnetic protection is provided by a soft-iron inner case. Water resistant to 100m.

How much does the IWC Ingenieur IW328901 cost in Australia? The Australian retail price for the IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 IW328901 is AU$20,300. Calibre24 is currently offering a mint Q3 2026 example below the official IWC retail price.

What is the difference between the IWC Ingenieur IW328901 and other IW3289 variants? The IW3289 family was released in 2023 in four references: IW328901 (black dial, stainless steel), IW328902 (silver dial, stainless steel), IW328903 (green/teal dial, stainless steel), and IW328904 (rhodium dial, titanium). An aqua dial variant has also been introduced. All share the same 40mm case, Calibre 32111 movement, and H-link bracelet. The key differentiator for the IW328901 is its bracelet finishing: the black dial reference has a fully brushed bracelet throughout, including the centre links, while other variants such as the aqua dial carry polished centre links against brushed outer links.

What is the IWC Calibre 32111? Calibre 32111 is IWC’s current in-house automatic movement for the Ingenieur Automatic 40, developed with ValFleurier. It runs at 28,800 vph, has 21 jewels across 164 components, and delivers a 120-hour (5-day) power reserve. The Pellaton bidirectional pawl-winding system uses ceramic components — IWC’s first calibre to do so — reducing friction and wear in the winding mechanism. The movement sits in a soft-iron inner case for anti-magnetic protection. It is not COSC-certified but runs to practical accuracy under normal wearing conditions.

Who designed the original IWC Ingenieur SL? The original Ingenieur SL (ref. 1832) was designed by Gérald Genta, delivered to IWC in 1974 and launched in 1976. Genta was also responsible for the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak (1972) and the Patek Philippe Nautilus (1976), making him the most influential watch designer of the late twentieth century. Fewer than 600 examples of the automatic ref. 1832 were produced, which makes vintage examples extremely rare. The 2023 Ingenieur Automatic 40 is IWC’s faithful revival of Genta’s original design.

What is the anti-magnetic protection on the IWC Ingenieur? The Ingenieur’s anti-magnetic protection is provided by a soft-iron inner case that encloses the movement. Soft iron is highly magnetically permeable, which means magnetic fields pass through it rather than penetrating the enclosed space where the movement sits. This shields the movement’s hairspring and escapement from interference that would cause a conventional watch to gain, lose, or stop entirely. The soft-iron inner case is a functional continuation of the original Ingenieur’s design brief from the 1950s, when IWC built it specifically for use in technically demanding environments.

What does the bracelet on the IW328901 look like? The IW328901 has an integrated stainless steel H-link bracelet in a fully brushed finish — both the centre links and the outer links are brushed, with no polished surfaces. This gives the bracelet a consistent, non-reflective, tool-watch appearance that complements the black dial. The clasp is a butterfly folding type with tool-free micro-adjust. The bracelet weighs approximately 145g total with the watch.

What is the guilloche dial on the IWC Ingenieur? The guilloche pattern on the Ingenieur Automatic 40 is a cross-hatched engraved texture applied to the dial surface, directly referencing Genta’s original 1976 design. On the black dial, the fine grid of crossed lines creates a depth effect and textural light-play that changes visibly with angle and lighting. The pattern is part of what makes the Ingenieur’s dial immediately distinctive — it is not a simple colour application but a three-dimensional surface with machined texture.

Is there anything wrong with this IWC Ingenieur? The watch is in mint condition — no damage, scratches, or wear of any kind. The only defect is on the presentation box: the snap button has come away from the box casing. This is a cosmetic issue with the packaging only and has no bearing on the watch, its accuracy, or its warranty status. The defect is shown in the listing photos, and the watch is priced to reflect it.
