IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 IW328907
The Ingenieur was born in 1955 as an engineer’s tool watch with a singular purpose: to keep accurate time in the presence of magnetic fields that would stop an ordinary mechanical watch. Industry and aerospace were expanding rapidly; precision instruments near electric motors, radar equipment, and industrial machinery needed protection. IWC’s answer was the soft-iron inner case — a magnetic shield surrounding the movement, invisible from the outside, that redirects magnetic flux away from the escapement. That principle remains unchanged in the IW328907. Seventy years of refinement, but the core argument is identical.
In 1976, Gérald Genta — the Swiss designer who would also create the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Patek Philippe Nautilus — produced the Ingenieur SL, reference 1832. It had a polished steel case, an integrated bracelet that dissolved into the case at both ends, and a bezel held by five visible screws. It was unusual at the time; it sold modestly. Fifty years later, it is recognised as one of the defining designs in sports watch history and the reference point by which every subsequent Ingenieur generation is judged.
The 2023 relaunch brought the Ingenieur back to a 40mm case — closer to the 1832’s proportions than any generation since — and restored the five functional bezel screws as the collection’s signature. The blue dial, added in December 2024, completes the picture: the combination of the steel screw bezel and blue dial is the most photographed, most discussed Ingenieur configuration currently available.
This is the detail that distinguishes the IW328907 from every other watch in IWC’s current catalogue. The dial is stamped from soft iron — the same material used in the inner case for magnetic protection — and given a grid pattern in negative relief: a recessed mesh of intersecting lines visible only on close inspection, giving the dial a depth and texture that a flat lacquer surface cannot match. Over this structure, IWC applies a PVD dark blue finish. The result is a dial that reads as one colour in low light and reveals its texture and dimension in direct light. Applied rhodium-plated markers and lume-filled hands sit above the surface with clear legibility.
Most watches that claim anti-magnetic protection rely on a single countermeasure: either a modified movement with non-magnetic alloys, or a soft-iron cage surrounding the movement. The Ingenieur uses both simultaneously. The soft-iron inner case (invisible inside the steel case body) redirects magnetic flux before it reaches the movement. The soft-iron dial forms a second layer of that cage — the front of the shield. Between them, the Calibre 32111 is protected to a standard suited to industrial, aerospace, and medical environments where magnetic interference is a daily reality.
IWC’s in-house Calibre 32111 is an automatic with a pawl winding system. Its standout figure is 120 hours of power reserve — five full days of runtime from a full wind. For a watch you wear Monday to Friday: wind it once on Monday morning and it will still be running on Sunday. The movement runs at 28,800 vph (4 Hz), uses rhodium-plated rotor and bridges, and drives the date at three o’clock with instantaneous correction. The sapphire crystal carries an anti-reflective coating on both faces.
The 40mm stainless steel case is 10.8mm thick and 45.7mm from lug to lug — a proportion that sits comfortably on a wide range of wrist sizes without the visual weight of a 42mm sports watch. The raised circular-brushed bezel is secured by five functional screws: not decorative, not cosmetic — the screws actually hold the bezel in place, as they have on Genta-designed sports watches since 1976. The crown is screw-down. The caseback is solid, engraved, and conceals the soft-iron inner cage. Water resistance is 100m.
The bracelet is the element that most clearly establishes the Ingenieur’s lineage: an integrated H-link design that flows directly from the case without a visible transition. The centre links are brushed, the lateral bevels polished — the same mix of finishing found on the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak bracelet, and for the same reason: contrast finishing requires more labour and more precision than a single-finish bracelet. The clasp is a concealed butterfly folding clasp. The 14mm lug width is narrower than most integrated bracelet sports watches, contributing to the Ingenieur’s wearability across dress and casual contexts.
This example presents in like-new condition. Supplied with the original IWC box, papers, and all 2025 set accessories. At a lower price against a current Australian retail price of AUD $20,300, this is saving on a watch that is no longer easy to find at authorised dealers in blue dial configuration.
What is the reference number for this IWC Ingenieur blue dial? The reference is IW328907 — the Ingenieur Automatic 40 in stainless steel with blue dial and integrated steel bracelet. IWC introduced the current Ingenieur generation in 2023 at 40mm, returning to proportions closer to the original 1955 and 1976 references. The blue dial variant (IW328907) was added to the collection in December 2024 and has been the most sought-after Ingenieur configuration since its release.
What is the significance of the five screws on the bezel? The five screws on the Ingenieur’s bezel are functional — they actually secure the bezel to the case — and they are a direct reference to Gérald Genta’s 1976 Ingenieur SL (reference 1832). Genta used the same five-screw bezel on that watch, which alongside the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and the Patek Philippe Nautilus helped define the sports watch genre as we know it today. The screws are not decorative: on the current 40mm Ingenieur, they hold the bezel in place as they did in 1976.
How does the anti-magnetic protection on this IWC Ingenieur work? The IW328907 uses a dual-layer soft-iron cage. The first layer is the soft-iron inner case, a shell inside the steel case body that surrounds the movement and redirects magnetic flux before it can reach the escapement. The second layer is the soft-iron dial itself, which forms the front face of that cage. Together they protect the Calibre 32111 from magnetic fields without requiring non-magnetic alloys in the movement. This approach traces directly to the original 1955 Ingenieur and remains the IWC-specific solution to magnetic protection.
What is the power reserve on the IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40? The Calibre 32111 provides approximately 120 hours — five full days — from a full wind. This is delivered by a pawl winding system and is one of the longest power reserves in the integrated-bracelet sports watch segment at this price point. For comparison, the Rolex Submariner offers ~70 hours, and the AP Royal Oak Selfwinding offers ~60 hours. A Monday morning wind on the IW328907 keeps the watch running until Saturday with reserve remaining.
How does the IWC Ingenieur 40 wear on the wrist? The 40mm case with 45.7mm lug-to-lug sits confidently on both medium and larger wrists without the spread of a 42mm case. The 14mm lug width is narrower than most integrated-bracelet sports watches (the Royal Oak is 18mm, the Nautilus 24mm), which means the Ingenieur drapes naturally and wears as comfortably under a shirt cuff as it does on an open wrist. The 10.8mm case height is slim for a sports watch with a 120-hour power reserve.
Is this IWC Ingenieur below Australian retail price? Yes. The current Australian retail price for the IW328907 is AUD $20,300 through IWC authorised dealers. This example is offered at AUD $15,995 — a saving of AUD $4,305 (approximately 21% below retail). It is in like-new condition with the complete 2025 set including original IWC box and papers.
What is the dial texture on the IW328907 blue dial? The blue dial is stamped from soft iron and given a grid pattern in negative relief — a recessed mesh of intersecting lines that gives the dial a three-dimensional texture. Over this structure, IWC applies a PVD dark blue finish, which imparts a depth of colour that a flat lacquer dial cannot match: near-navy in shadow, richer and more dimensional in direct light. The applied rhodium-plated markers and lume-filled hands sit above this textured surface.
