Patek Philippe Complications 5172G-001 — Patek’s hand-wound chronograph, uncompromised
The hand-wound chronograph occupies a specific and demanding place in haute horlogerie. It requires a movement without the convenience of an automatic rotor — the wearer interacts with it daily, winding the crown, engaging the pushers — and it asks the manufacture to justify that level of involvement through finishing, architecture, and feel that an automatic cannot offer. Patek Philippe has been making hand-wound chronographs since the 1930s, and the 5172G-001 is the current expression of that lineage.
The 5172G replaced the widely celebrated reference 5170 in 2019, itself the first chronograph of classical architecture to carry a movement developed and manufactured entirely in-house by Patek Philippe. The 5172 immediately captured collectors with its vintage design cues: luminescent syringe hands, distinctive Arabic numerals, stepped lugs, and round guilloché pushers that pay direct homage to the vintage reference 1463. It is, by the standards of modern watchmaking, a deliberate anachronism — and the better for it.
The case: white gold, three-tier lugs
The 41mm 18k white gold case features polished pump pushers and three-tier stepped lugs, with a sapphire exhibition caseback framing the CH 29-535 PS calibre. The box-type domed sapphire crystal above the dial is one of the 5172G’s most distinctive visual signatures — it recalls mid-century watchmaking and adds perceptible depth to the dial when viewed at an angle. Every surface is fully polished, which on white gold reads warmer and more restrained than yellow or rose gold.
The dial: deep blue varnish, white gold numerals, syringe hands
The blue varnished dial carries applied white gold Arabic numerals with luminescent coating, white gold syringe-shaped hour and minute hands, and a tachymeter scale in white. The bi-compax layout — 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, small seconds at 9 — keeps the dial symmetrical and fully legible. There is no date complication to clutter the face. This is a pure chronograph dial, and it reads as one.
The movement: Calibre CH 29-535 PS
The CH 29-535 PS is Patek Philippe’s first manufacture-made chronograph movement, introduced in 2009. It combines traditional chronograph architecture — column wheel, horizontal clutch, manual winding — with six patented innovations, including optimised tooth profiles, precision adjustment of gear engagement depth, and self-regulating zero-resetting hammers.
- Calibre: CH 29-535 PS
- Winding: Manual
- Power reserve: 65 hours (with chronograph disengaged)
- Frequency: 28,800 vph (4 Hz)
- Jewels: 33
- Parts: 270
- Balance spring: Breguet type
- Escapement: Lever
- Chronograph: Column wheel, horizontal clutch
- Certification: Patek Philippe Seal (supersedes COSC — stricter standard)
The movement is visible through the sapphire exhibition caseback and finished to the standard the Patek Philippe Seal demands: Geneva stripes, chamfered and polished bridges, bevelled edges. At this level, the movement is part of the watch.

Condition
Mint and near-new throughout. The case shows no wear and retains its factory finish — no deep scratches on the lugs or bezel, no case rounding. The blue dial is pristine, the exhibition caseback is clear. The original blue calfskin strap is well preserved. The hang tag is present, which is often the first item to go in a pre-owned full set. This is as close to new 5172G as it appears for a used example.
The value proposition
Current Australian retail for the 5172G-001 is AUD $151,750 at authorised dealers. This example is available at nearly 40% below that figure, as Australian local stock in Mint condition with a complete full set including hang tag. The secondary market for the 5172G reflects a broader softening in white gold dress watch values — the watch hasn’t changed, the price has. For a buyer who intends to wear it, this is a meaningful entry point into a reference that carries the Patek Philippe Seal, an in-house hand-wound manufacture movement, and a design lineage that runs back to the 1940s.

What is the Patek Philippe 5172G-001? The 5172G-001 is Patek Philippe’s current-generation hand-wound dress chronograph, introduced in 2019. It has a 41mm polished 18k white gold case with a box-type domed sapphire crystal, stepped three-tier lugs, round guilloché pump pushers, and a deep blue varnished dial with white gold Arabic numerals and syringe hands. It is powered by the in-house Calibre CH 29-535 PS, Patek Philippe’s own manufacture chronograph movement, with a 65-hour power reserve and a column wheel mechanism. It carries the Patek Philippe Seal — the brand’s own certification standard, stricter than COSC.
What replaced the Patek Philippe 5170? What is the difference between the 5170 and 5172? The 5172G replaced the 5170 in 2019. Both share the same in-house Calibre CH 29-535 PS hand-wound movement and the same fundamental chronograph architecture. The 5172G introduced a redesigned case with more pronounced stepped lugs, a box-type domed sapphire crystal replacing the flat crystal of the 5170, guilloché-tipped round pump pushers directly referencing the vintage reference 1463, and a slightly more sculptural case profile. Collectors regard the 5172G as a refinement and enhancement of the 5170 rather than a departure from it.
What is the Patek Philippe Seal? The Patek Philippe Seal is the brand’s proprietary quality and accuracy standard, introduced in 2009 to replace their previous Geneva Seal certification. It covers the entire watch — movement, case, dial, and hands — not just the movement. Accuracy requirements under the Patek Philippe Seal are stricter than COSC chronometer standards: the movement must perform to within -3/+2 seconds per day after casing. Every 5172G-001 carries the Patek Philippe Seal.
What is the Calibre CH 29-535 PS in the Patek Philippe 5172G? The CH 29-535 PS is Patek Philippe’s in-house hand-wound chronograph calibre, first introduced in 2009. It is a bi-compax layout with a 30-minute counter and small seconds, running at 28,800 vph. It uses a column wheel mechanism and horizontal clutch for the chronograph operation — the traditional high-end chronograph construction — and incorporates six patented innovations including self-regulating zero-resetting hammers. Power reserve is 65 hours with the chronograph disengaged, 33 jewels, 270 parts. The movement is finished to Patek Philippe Seal standards and visible through the sapphire exhibition caseback.
Why does the Patek Philippe 5172G have round pushers? The round guilloché pump pushers on the 5172G are a deliberate reference to the vintage Patek Philippe reference 1463, the brand’s first water-resistant chronograph, produced from the 1940s through the 1960s. The 1463 is one of the most collected vintage Patek references and its pump pusher profile is instantly recognisable to collectors. The guilloché engraving on the pusher tips is a further detail carried directly from that vintage aesthetic.
Is the Patek Philippe 5172G a good value at current secondary market prices? At Calibre24.com.au, this Patek Philippe 5172G-001 is offered at an exceptional price point in Australia, making it a compelling choice for collectors who value unpolished, original condition with factory finish, yet near-new condition of such a mastepiece, that’s, simply put, a rare sight, especially for this price. Featuring Patek Philippe’s in-house hand-wound manufacture movement, the prestigious Patek Philippe Seal, and a design lineage that traces back to the 1940s, this reference embodies timeless craftsmanship. With the market for white gold dress complications adjusting, our pricing reflects the best value of the watch. For those seeking a distinguished piece, this represents a rare chance to secure a heritage-driven reference at a level that makes strong sense relative to replacement cost.
Can I sell or trade in my Patek Philippe? Yes. Calibre24 buys and takes consignment on Patek Philippe and other high-end references. Contact us for a current valuation.

REVIEWS
I purchased my first rolex from Calibre and the experience was 10/10. They took their time showing me through all their beautiful pieces, it felt intimate and professional. Highly recommend.
First time buying in the luxury watch market and it was a great experience. Hafiz was very professional, knowledgeable and a fair negotiator. I now own an awesome Omega and I couldn’t be happier. Win win!
Bought this timepiece not long ago and had an amazing experience with Calibre24.
I enjoy this beautiful watch everyday.
However, they operate by appointment only - not a walk-in store. You have to book an appointment prior to visiting them.

Hafiz and team are phenomenal and professional. Excellent communication. Have purchased and sold with Hafiz, truly brilliant.
Caliber24 was a great surprise to us. Hafiz stocks genuine, hard to obtain Rolex models. His experience and expertise becomes evident once you meet him. He only sells genuine watches and I couldn’t be happier with the Rolex submariner no date I bought from him. The price was right, he welcomes 3rd party inspection and there is no pushy hard sell. Thanks Hafiz for the great buying experience, we will definitely be back.

The watch was well packed, nicely presented and shipped quickly. Everything was exactly as described. Prompt and professional communication from Hafiz throughout both on email and on the phone. I’m very happy with the watch and the transaction as a whole. Highly recommend this seller.
This was my first time purchasing a luxury/expensive watch, and I honestly can’t speak highly enough of Hafiz. Naturally this being my first purchase I had more questions that a usual buyer, but Hafiz was more than happy to answer all my questions, and provide me with great advice. I didn’t feel any pressure to commit to any purchase, and we discussed the pros and cons of each piece.
Couldn’t be happier with my decision and can’t thank Hafiz and everyone at Calibre24 enough. If you’re in the market, I highly recommend contacting Hafiz!
