Rolex Daytona Black Dial, Ceramic Bezel (Ref. 126500LN, 2026)
Rolex introduced the Cosmograph Daytona in 1963, named after the Daytona International Speedway and purpose-built for professional motorsport. The chronograph’s function was precise: measure elapsed time, calculate average speed against the tachymeter bezel, record results. The design that emerged from that brief — clean, legible, purposeful — has remained essentially unchanged for sixty years, which is why examples from every generation remain immediately recognisable as Daytonas.
For most of its history, the Daytona came in two dial configurations: white dial with black counters (the “Panda”) and black dial with white counters (the “Reverse Panda”). But when Rolex introduced the black Cerachrom ceramic tachymeter bezel with the 116500LN in 2016, something changed for the black-dial version. The combination of black dial and black ceramic bezel created an aesthetic with no precedent in Daytona history — a watch that looked like a single, unified dark object rather than a conventional two-tone chronograph. The collector community responded with a nickname that fit: Godzilla. Not subtle; not restrained; monolithic, imposing, and impossible to ignore.
This example is a 2026 production piece, brand new in box, never worn.
The 126500LN arrived in 2023 at Watches and Wonders, updating the 116500LN that had defined the steel Daytona since 2016. The changes follow Rolex’s established pattern of incremental refinement rather than reinvention: the new Calibre 4131 replaces the 4130 with a more efficient Chronergy escapement — the same technology applied across the current sport watch generation — extending the power reserve from 48 to 72 hours. The case received refined proportions with more symmetrical lugs at 47.8mm lug-to-lug. The bracelet was updated with improved end-link integration.
The black Cerachrom bezel itself remains the same defining element introduced in 2016. The ceramic compound Rolex calls Cerachrom is extremely hard, scratch-resistant under normal conditions, and immune to UV fading. The tachymeter scale and graduations are moulded into the ceramic during production and then PVD-coated in platinum — a process that ensures the markings are part of the bezel’s structure, not applied to its surface. After decades of ownership, the bezel on a Cerachrom Daytona looks the same as it did the day it left the factory.
The 126500LN black dial carries three subdials in a light silver-tone that collectors call the “Reverse Panda” configuration: running seconds at 6 o’clock, a 30-minute chronograph counter at 3, and a 12-hour counter at 9. The inverted layout — light counters on a dark base — reverses the Panda’s visual logic, and against the black Cerachrom bezel the effect is unified and dramatic. Applied hour markers and Chromalight luminescence on both hands and markers provide low-light legibility without disturbing the all-dark aesthetic in daylight. The dial is lacquered rather than printed, giving it depth and a subtle sheen that changes character under different light.
The absence of a date window is one of the Daytona’s defining characteristics — and one of the reasons it occupies a different place in the Rolex hierarchy from the Submariner or GMT-Master II. The chronograph functions and the integrated tachymeter bezel are the complication here; the clean, symmetrical dial layout is the payoff.
The Calibre 4131 is Rolex’s current manufacture chronograph movement, introduced with the 126500LN in 2023. It is a self-winding column-wheel chronograph with a vertical clutch, running at 28,800 vph (4 Hz) with 44 jewels. The Chronergy escapement — a nickel-phosphorus lever and escape wheel combination — reduces energy loss in the escapement by around 15% compared to the previous generation, which is where the 72-hour power reserve comes from. The Parachrom hairspring is blue, paramagnetic, and highly resistant to magnetic fields and temperature variation. Paraflex shock absorbers protect the movement further.
The movement carries Rolex’s Superlative Chronometer certification: an in-house standard that specifies daily accuracy of −2/+2 seconds after casing (tighter than the COSC standard of −4/+6), tested on the complete watch rather than the bare movement.
This is a 2026 production example, unworn. The complete set includes the original green Rolex box, outer presentation box, warranty card, all booklets, green hangtag, and supplementary documentation.
Q: Why is the Rolex Daytona 126500LN called the “Godzilla”? A: The Godzilla nickname emerged among collectors after Rolex introduced the black Cerachrom ceramic bezel with the 116500LN in 2016. The combination of a black dial and black ceramic tachymeter bezel created an all-dark aesthetic unlike anything in the Daytona’s history — imposing, monolithic, and dramatically different from the contrast-driven Panda and Reverse Panda configurations. Collectors reached for a name that matched the watch’s character: Godzilla. The nickname carried forward to the 126500LN introduced in 2023. It is less universally used than “Panda” but immediately understood by any serious Daytona collector.
Q: What is the difference between the Rolex Daytona Godzilla and the Panda? A: Both the Godzilla and the Panda are reference 126500LN — mechanically identical watches with the same Calibre 4131 movement, the same Oystersteel case and bracelet, and the same black Cerachrom bezel. The difference is the dial: the Panda has a white dial with dark chronograph subdials (the classic configuration since the 1960s), while the Godzilla has a black dial with light-tone chronograph subdials. The Godzilla’s black dial against the black ceramic bezel produces the unified dark aesthetic that earned it the name. Both carry the same AU retail price.
Q: What movement is in the Rolex Daytona 126500LN? A: The 126500LN uses Rolex Calibre 4131, a manufacture self-winding column-wheel chronograph with 44 jewels, running at 28,800 vph. The Chronergy escapement delivers approximately 72 hours of power reserve — significantly more than the 48 hours of the previous 4130 movement in the 116500LN. The Parachrom hairspring is paramagnetic. The movement is certified as a Superlative Chronometer to Rolex’s own standard of −2/+2 seconds per day accuracy after casing.
Q: What is the Cerachrom bezel on the Rolex Daytona? A: Cerachrom is Rolex’s proprietary ceramic compound used for the tachymeter bezel insert. It is harder than steel under normal conditions, scratch-resistant, and immune to UV fading — the surface will not change colour or lose definition over decades of wear. The tachymeter scale is moulded into the ceramic during manufacture and then coated in platinum via PVD, so the markings are structural rather than applied to the surface. On the Godzilla, the bezel is black Cerachrom, creating the all-dark aesthetic that defines the configuration.
Q: Is the Rolex Daytona 126500LN hard to get from an authorised dealer? A: Yes. The steel Daytona in any configuration has been one of the most revered references in the Rolex range since the 116500LN debuted in 2016, and the 126500LN continues that pattern. Authorised dealer wait lists for the Godzilla are open-ended; many buyers wait years without a confirmed allocation. Calibre24 offers this brand new, full-set 2026 example — available now, with no waitlist.
Q: Is this Rolex Daytona brand new? A: Yes. This is a 2026 production example that has never been worn. It comes complete with the original Rolex presentation box, outer box, warranty card, all booklets, swing tags, and supplementary documentation. The bracelet and case are in factory condition throughout.
Q: What is the lug-to-lug measurement of the Rolex Daytona 126500LN? A: The 126500LN measures approximately 47.8mm lug-to-lug, with a 40mm case diameter and 20mm lug width. At 11.9mm thick, it sits lower on the wrist than the visual impact of the Cerachrom bezel might suggest. For reference, the 126500LN is marginally longer lug-to-lug than the 116500LN it replaced, due to updated lug geometry.
Q: Can I see this watch in person in Perth? A: Yes. Calibre24 is based in Perth, Western Australia. Contact us to arrange a private viewing.
