The Rolex Explorer 36 Rolesor 124273— a rare configuration

The Explorer’s story begins in 1953 — the year Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary wore Rolex watches to the summit of Everest. For most of the Explorer’s life, it came in one form: Oystersteel, black dial, no variation. The Rolesor two-tone configuration — Oystersteel paired with 18k yellow gold — arrived only with the 2021 generation, making it a contemporary rarity in the Explorer’s seventy-year history.

The 124273 carries an 18k yellow gold bezel, crown, and the centre links of its Oyster bracelet. The outer bracelet links remain brushed Oystersteel. The result sits somewhere between tool watch and luxury sports piece — Explorer DNA in a dress-capable configuration that the Submariner and Daytona two-tone variants have long occupied, but the Explorer historically has not.

This example is 2024, new old stock, unworn, and accompanied by the full original set. It is offered below the current Rolex Australia retail price of AU$24,400 — an opportunity that is unusual on any generation of Rolex, and particularly so on a reference that sits at the smaller, more wearable 36mm dimension.

The 36mm case — the original Explorer dimension

The current Explorer generation returned the reference to 36mm in 2021, correcting a dimension that had drifted to 39mm in the post-2010 generation. Thirty-six millimetres is the Explorer’s original dimension and widely considered its correct proportion: enough presence on the wrist without the bulk of a larger sport watch, universally wearable across wrist sizes, and — in 2024 — genuinely compelling for buyers who find the 39–42mm prevalence of modern sport watches too large for daily wear.

The 36mm case here is Oystersteel, with the Rolesor gold elements on the bezel, crown, and centre bracelet links providing the precious metal component. The polished finishing on the gold contrasts with the brushed Oystersteel flanks of the case and bracelet — a combination that Rolex has refined across the Datejust, Submariner, and now the Explorer.

Calibre 3230 — the current-generation Explorer movement

Calibre 3230 is the movement Rolex introduced with the 2020 Submariner generation and fitted to the current Explorer at its 2021 launch. It is a significant step on from the Calibre 3132 it replaced: 70 hours of power reserve against 48 hours previously, a Chronergy escapement that Rolex engineered for greater efficiency, and improved magnetic resistance through the Parachrom hairspring. At 28,800 vph and 31 jewels, it runs to Superlative Chronometer certification — Rolex’s own standard above COSC, requiring ±2 seconds per day after casing.

The Chronergy escapement achieves approximately 15% greater energy efficiency than conventional Swiss lever escapements. The Parachrom hairspring — Rolex-manufactured from a paramagnetic alloy — performs reliably in magnetic fields that affect standard steel hairsprings, and returns more accurately to position after impact. For a watch certified to be worn anywhere the Explorer’s name implies it should be worn, these are meaningful engineering choices, not marketing distinctions.

FAQ block

What is the Rolex Explorer 36 124273? The 124273 is Rolex’s two-tone Rolesor configuration of the current-generation Explorer 36. Introduced in 2021 as part of the Explorer’s return to 36mm, it pairs an Oystersteel case and outer bracelet links with an 18k yellow gold bezel, crown, and centre bracelet links. The black dial features Chromalight luminous Arabic numerals at 3, 6, and 9, and all hands and indexes are 18k yellow gold. It is powered by Calibre 3230 with a 70-hour power reserve and rated to 100m water resistance. The 124273 is one of very few two-tone configurations in the Explorer’s history — the model ran exclusively in Oystersteel for most of its existence from 1953 to 2021.

Is this Rolex Explorer 36 124273 available in Australia and priced below retail? Yes. This new old stock 124273 is held by Calibre24 in Perth and ships fully insured across Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Adelaide. It is offered below the current Rolex Australia retail price of AU$24,400 and is available immediately — no authorised dealer wait list or allocation required. Viewings by appointment in Perth.

What is the difference between the Rolex Explorer 124270 and 124273? The 124270 and 124273 are the two variants of the current Explorer 36. The 124270 is the all-Oystersteel version with white gold hands and indexes. The 124273 is the Rolesor version — Oystersteel case and outer bracelet links combined with an 18k yellow gold bezel, crown, and centre bracelet links, and 18k yellow gold hands and indexes on the dial. Both share the same 36mm case, Calibre 3230 movement, black dial, 100m water resistance, and Oyster bracelet with Easylink extension. The 124273 carries a higher retail price, reflecting the gold content.

What does NOS mean for a Rolex watch? NOS stands for New Old Stock. It describes a watch that has never been worn but is no longer in its first year of retail availability — in this case, a 2024 124273 that is unworn and complete with original boxes and paperwork. NOS Rolex watches occupy a specific secondary market position: they are physically in new condition while carrying their original documentation. This example has not been sized, so the bracelet is in its original factory configuration.

What is Yellow Rolesor on the Rolex Explorer? Yellow Rolesor is Rolex’s proprietary combination of Oystersteel and 18k yellow gold. On the Explorer 124273, Rolesor means the bezel and crown are solid 18k yellow gold, and the centre links of the three-piece Oyster bracelet are solid 18k yellow gold, while the case flanks and outer bracelet links remain brushed Oystersteel. All gold components on the 124273 carry polished finishing. Rolex manufactures its own gold alloys and controls the full production chain for both the steel and gold elements.

What is Calibre 3230 in the Rolex Explorer 36? Calibre 3230 is Rolex’s current-generation self-winding movement, introduced for the 2020 Submariner update and fitted to the Explorer 36 from its 2021 re-launch. It runs at 28,800 vph with 31 jewels and delivers approximately 70 hours of power reserve — a significant improvement over the 48 hours of the preceding Calibre 3132. It features Rolex’s Chronergy escapement (approximately 15% more efficient than conventional Swiss lever escapements) and a Parachrom hairspring, which is paramagnetic and highly resistant to magnetic fields. It is certified to Rolex’s Superlative Chronometer standard of ±2 seconds per day after casing.

What is the current Rolex Australia retail price for the 124273? The current Rolex Australia retail price for the Explorer 36 Rolesor (124273) is AU$24,400. This example from Calibre24 is offered below that figure, with immediate availability and no authorised dealer wait list.

What is the water resistance of the Rolex Explorer 36? The Explorer 36 — both the 124270 and 124273 — is rated to 100m / 10 bar / 330ft water resistance. This is lower than the Submariner (300m) but sufficient for swimming, snorkelling, and everyday exposure to water. The screw-down Twinlock crown provides the seal. For reference, the Submariner’s Triplock crown achieves 300m; the Explorer’s Twinlock achieves 100m. The Explorer is a field and travel watch by design, not a dive instrument.
