The Rolex Explorer II Polar 226570: Born for Extremes, Built for Every Day
There is a reason every serious Rolex collector eventually arrives at the Explorer II. No precious metals, no diamonds, no showmanship. Just 42mm of Oystersteel, a fixed 24-hour bezel that cannot be accidentally rotated, Chromalight luminescence visible in total darkness, and a movement with 70 hours of reserve — enough to run through a long weekend without winding. The Explorer II is the tool that professional cave explorers, Antarctic researchers, and arctic expedition teams choose. It is also, by consequence, one of the most waitlisted references at every Rolex authorised.
This example is brand new, full set, 2026 — the “Polar” white dial variant (reference 226570), the most sought-after dial option in the 226570 family. Available today without a waitlist or prior purchase history required.
The “Polar” Dial: Why White Wins
The white dial Explorer II has carried the nickname “Polar” since the original 16570 reference, in tribute to the dial colour adopted for the professional polar expedition versions. On the 226570, the white dial provides maximum contrast for the black 24-hour numerals on the fixed bezel and the black Arabic hour numerals at 3, 9, and the 24-hour hand scale — legibility in extreme conditions is built in by design, not by convention.
The applied Chromalight hour markers fill with Rolex’s proprietary luminescent compound, emitting a blue-tinted glow that outlasts traditional Super-LumiNova and remains visible for significantly longer in low-light environments. The orange-tipped GMT/second time zone hand stands out against the white dial in a way that simply does not register as powerfully on the black 226570-0002 — a practical reason why the Polar variant commands a consistent premium on the secondary market. The date window sits at 3 o’clock beneath a Cyclops magnifier on the flat sapphire crystal.
Fixed 24-Hour Bezel: The Functional Core
The Explorer II’s defining feature is its fixed, engraved 24-hour graduated bezel. Unlike the GMT-Master II’s bidirectional ceramic bezel — which can be rotated to track a third time zone and is designed around jet travel — the Explorer II’s bezel is fixed in place. This was a deliberate engineering choice for the original use case: deep cave systems and polar environments where there is no sunrise or sunset to distinguish AM from PM. The fixed 24-hour scale provides an absolute AM/PM reference against the orange 24-hour hand, eliminating any ambiguity regardless of the light conditions outside.
In daily use, the fixed bezel enables dual time zone reading: set the main hour hand to local time, and read the reference (home) time off the orange 24-hour hand against the fixed scale. The hands can be adjusted independently via the crown — the orange 24-hour hand moves in one-hour increments while the minute hand and running seconds are undisturbed — the same independently adjustable local time function found in Rolex’s GMT family. The 24-hour hand is also independently adjustable, making crossing time zones a matter of moving only the local hour hand.
Calibre 3285: 70 Hours, Chronergy, Superlative
The 226570 is powered by Rolex Calibre 3285, one of the most capable movements in the brand’s current lineup. Operating at 28,800 vph (4 Hz) across 31 jewels with an approximately 70-hour power reserve, the 3285 brings several technical advantages over its predecessors. The Chronergy escapement — a Rolex-patented redesign of the Swiss lever escapement — achieves 15% greater energy efficiency than a conventional lever geometry, contributing directly to the extended power reserve and improving long-term reliability. The Parachrom Blue paramagnetic hairspring, manufactured by Rolex in-house, is insensitive to magnetic fields and up to 10 times more resistant to shocks than conventional hairsprings, while also performing more predictably across temperature ranges. Paraflex shock absorbers protect the balance pivots.
As a Superlative Chronometer, the 3285 is first certified by COSC to ±4 sec/day, then adjusted and retested by Rolex after casing to meet the stricter in-house standard of ±2 seconds per day. Both certifications are reflected on the dial’s crown logo in green.
Case, Bracelet, and Water Resistance
The 226570 case is machined from a single block of Oystersteel — Rolex’s proprietary 904L stainless steel alloy, which offers superior corrosion resistance and a higher polish retention compared to the 316L steel used by most of the watch industry. The 42mm diameter is matched by a measured case thickness of approximately 12.3mm, giving the Explorer II a notably low profile relative to its case diameter. Lug width is 21mm; lug-to-lug is approximately 50mm.
The fixed bezel is brushed stainless steel, engraved with 24-hour graduations and filled numerals. The sapphire crystal is flat — no Cyclops bubble except at the date — and carries anti-reflective treatment on the inner surface. The caseback is solid, screw-down, and non-exhibition.
The bracelet is the Oyster, Rolex’s three-link solid construction, with a brushed centre link and polished outer links — the same architecture on the Explorer II as on the Submariner and Datejust, but here without the dressier finishing of the professional sport models. The clasp is an Oysterlock safety folding clasp with the Easylink 5mm comfort extension, allowing a quick half-link adjustment in warm conditions without tools.
Water resistance is 100 metres (330 feet), achieved through the same Oyster case architecture as across the professional range: screw-down caseback, screw-down winding crown, and sapphire crystal gasket.
No Waitlist: Buy It Today
The 226570 — in either dial variant — has been on allocation at Rolex authorised dealers. The Polar (white dial) version is the more constrained of the two. For buyers without an established relationship with an authorised dealer, or who do not wish to commit to building a purchase history to qualify, the secondary and grey market is the realistic acquisition path. This example is brand new, full set, never worn — functionally identical to a dealer purchase.

FAQs
Q: What is the difference between the Rolex Explorer II 226570-0001 and 226570-0002? A: The 226570-0001 is the “Polar” white dial variant; the 226570-0002 is the black dial. Both share identical case, movement (Calibre 3285), bezel, bracelet, and all technical specifications — the only difference is the dial colour. The white Polar dial provides stronger contrast for the 24-hour bezel numerals and is considered the more collectible of the two, historically commanding a premium on the secondary market. Both are on allocation at Australian authorised dealers.
Q: What is the Rolex Explorer II 226570 “Polar”? A: “Polar” is the collector nickname for the white-dial Rolex Explorer II, applied since the 16570 reference of the 1980s and 1990s when Rolex produced white-dial Explorer IIs for professional polar expeditions. The name is not Rolex’s own marketing term but is universally recognised in the collector community. On the current 226570-0001, it refers to the white dial with black applied hour markers, black Arabic numerals, and the orange-tipped 24-hour GMT hand.
Q: What movement is in the Rolex Explorer II 226570? A: The 226570 houses Rolex Calibre 3285, a self-winding manufacture movement operating at 28,800 vph (4 Hz) across 31 jewels with approximately 70 hours of power reserve. It features Rolex’s patented Chronergy escapement for improved energy efficiency, a Parachrom Blue paramagnetic hairspring, and Paraflex shock absorbers. It is certified as a Superlative Chronometer to ±2 seconds per day — a stricter standard than COSC’s ±4 sec/day, applied after casing.
Q: How does the Rolex Explorer II 226570 track a second time zone? A: The Explorer II uses a fixed 24-hour graduated bezel combined with an independently adjustable orange 24-hour hand. Set the main hour hand to local time; the orange hand points to the reference (home) time against the fixed 24-hour bezel scale. To adjust for a new local time zone, turn the crown to advance or retract only the local hour hand in one-hour increments, leaving the orange reference hand and seconds hand undisturbed. The fixed bezel also eliminates AM/PM ambiguity in environments without daylight — the original purpose for the Explorer II’s design.
Q: Why does the Rolex Explorer II 226570 have a fixed bezel instead of a rotating one? A: The Explorer II was designed for use in extreme environments — polar expeditions and deep cave systems — where there is no daylight to distinguish AM from PM. A rotating bezel could be accidentally shifted in a glove, rendering the time-zone function unreliable. The fixed 24-hour bezel provides a permanent, tamper-proof reference that always displays the same 24-hour scale, making it suited to environments where the bezel must be absolutely trusted without checking its position first. This distinguishes the Explorer II from the GMT-Master II, which uses a rotating ceramic bezel suited to frequent time-zone changes.
Q: What is the water resistance of the Rolex Explorer II 226570? A: The Explorer II 226570 is water resistant to 100 metres (330 feet). This is achieved through the Oyster case: a solid screw-down caseback, screw-down winding crown, and sapphire crystal gasket. It is suitable for swimming and brief immersion but is not rated for professional scuba diving — that standard (200m+) belongs to the Submariner.
Q: Why is the Rolex Explorer II so hard to buy from a dealer? A: The 226570 has been on tight allocation at Rolex authorised dealers since launch in 2021. Rolex controls production volumes and distributes watches through its authorised network with no option to order directly or buy online. Customers at most Australian ADs are required to have an established purchase history to be considered for waitlisted references, and even then supply is not guaranteed. The Explorer II — particularly the Polar white dial — is one of the most requested references relative to available supply. Purchasing through a reputable secondary market dealer with a BNIB example is the most practical alternative.
Q: Is the Rolex Explorer II 226570 a good investment? A: The 226570 has appreciated since launch and currently trades above the original retail price on the secondary market, with the Polar dial commanding a consistent premium over the black dial. That said, all watch market values fluctuate and no specific future return can be guaranteed. As a Rolex in Oystersteel with strong allocation constraints and enduring demand, the Explorer II has historically been among the more resilient references in a market correction. The more relevant consideration for most buyers is the combination of purchase price, condition (BNIB), and provenance.

REVIEWS
Highly professional and great buying experience
First watch purchase through Calibre24. From the moment we made contact and I walked through the door of the showroom, Hafiz's conduct has been nothing short of exceptional. He is a gentleman, professional, and his love and passion for watches was immediately apparent. The showroom was well presented, comfortable and the environment felt very private and personalised.
We chatted about his start in watches, the history of the company as well as my own watch journey and before we knew it an hour had gone by just having a great conversation.
In terms of the product itself, Hafiz spared no detail in answering every question that I had. The product itself was as advertised and the transaction was quick and smooth.
Quite simply, it was an great purchase experience and better than any watch boutique I have been to.
I would have no hesitation recommending Calibre24 to friends and family and am looking forward to purchasing another timepiece from Hafiz in the near future.

Great to deal with. Very professional. Highly recommend.
Purchasing a watch online for the first time can be a daunting experience.
Can I trust the person I'm dealing with? Is my money in safe hands? Will I receive exactly what I've paid for?
These are all questions that naturally go through your mind, particularly when purchasing a luxury watch.
My experience with Hafiz was nothing short of excellent.
From the very beginning, Hafiz was professional, honest and reassuring. His communication throughout the process gave me the confidence that I was dealing with someone who genuinely values his customers and takes pride in his reputation.
The entire transaction was smooth, and the watch arrived exactly as promised.
I couldn't be happier with my purchase or the service I received.
For anyone considering purchasing a watch from Hafiz, I would have no hesitation in recommending him.

First time buying in the luxury watch market and it was a great experience. Hafiz was very professional, knowledgeable and a fair negotiator. I now own an awesome Omega and I couldn’t be happier. Win win!
Bought this timepiece not long ago and had an amazing experience with Calibre24.
I enjoy this beautiful watch everyday.
However, they operate by appointment only - not a walk-in store. You have to book an appointment prior to visiting them.

Hafiz and team are phenomenal and professional. Excellent communication. Have purchased and sold with Hafiz, truly brilliant.
Caliber24 was a great surprise to us. Hafiz stocks genuine, hard to obtain Rolex models. His experience and expertise becomes evident once you meet him. He only sells genuine watches and I couldn’t be happier with the Rolex submariner no date I bought from him. The price was right, he welcomes 3rd party inspection and there is no pushy hard sell. Thanks Hafiz for the great buying experience, we will definitely be back.
