The Rolex GMT-Master II needs little introduction to anyone with a serious interest in sports watches — but within the reference family, the 116710LN occupies a particular place. Where the 116710BLNR (“Batman”) split the bezel between black and blue to read night from day, the 116710LN kept the bezel entirely black and gave the distinction to the GMT hand itself: a distinctive bright green arrow that sweeps the 24-hour scale on the Cerachrom bezel, telling the time in a second timezone at a glance. The result is a watch with a more restrained, monochromatic profile that then reveals its colour detail only on closer inspection — a characteristic that has made the 116710LN a consistent favourite with both daily wearers and collectors.
The reference ran from 2007 to 2019, when it was replaced by the Calibre 3285-powered 126710LN. A 2016 example sits comfortably in the middle of the production run — old enough to have a track record for reliability, recent enough to expect excellent condition across case, bracelet and movement.
The 116710LN’s bezel insert is machined from Rolex’s proprietary Cerachrom ceramic — an exceptionally hard material virtually immune to scratching from daily wear, and inherently resistant to UV fading. Unlike the aluminium insert bezels on earlier GMT-Masters, the Cerachrom bezel will not fade, peel, or dull over years of ownership. The 24-hour scale is moulded directly into the ceramic during manufacture and then coated in platinum by PVD — the raised numerals and markings carry a cool metallic finish against the matte black ceramic surround. After more than a decade on the wrist, a well-kept Cerachrom bezel looks essentially the same as a new one. This is a single color bezel, all black. The current GMT line doesn’t have any single color bezel, which makes it a very unique piece.
The 116710LN’s green GMT hand is more than a colourful accent — it is the primary functional indicator for the second timezone. While the standard hour, minute, and seconds hands read local time against the main dial, the green arrow hand tracks a reference time zone against the 24-hour scale on the bezel. To change the local time display (when crossing time zones), the hacking mechanism (separate crown position) on the crown allows the hour hand to jump in one-hour increments without stopping the seconds hand — a genuine travelling complication, not just a decorative one. The matching green “GMT-MASTER II” text on the dial ties the colour story together without overplaying it.
The movement in this 116710LN is Rolex Calibre 3186 — the automatic movement that powered every 116710LN from introduction to retirement.
Superlative Chronometer: The 3186 is certified by Rolex as a Superlative Chronometer, a standard more demanding than standard COSC chronometer certification. Where COSC allows ±4 seconds per day, Rolex’s in-house testing holds the 3186 to ±2 seconds per day after casing.
Parachrom Blue hairspring: The balance wheel runs on a Parachrom Blue hairspring — a proprietary paramagnetic alloy hairspring developed by Rolex that is approximately 10 times more resistant to magnetic disturbance than a conventional steel hairspring. It is also more resistant to shocks and temperature variation, contributing to long-term rate stability.
Paraflex shock absorption: The shock-absorbing system uses Rolex’s proprietary Paraflex geometry, which offers approximately 50% better shock resistance than a conventional Incabloc system.
48-hour power reserve: The mainspring delivers approximately 48 hours of power reserve when fully wound.
This example comes with a fully linked Oyster bracelet — a detail worth calling out because it is not guaranteed on pre-owned sports Rolex watches. Many 116710LN examples on the secondary market have had links removed to fit a smaller wrist, which reduces the reserve of adjustment and (for some collectors) affects the overall presentation. A fully linked bracelet means all original links are present, giving the next owner the full range of bracelet adjustment Rolex intended. The Oyster bracelet on the 116710LN features three-piece solid-link construction across five rows secured by the Oysterlock folding safety clasp with Easylink 5mm comfort extension.
The original Rolex boxes for a 2016 example will naturally carry the marks of a decade of existence — some staining and aging to the packaging material. This is normal and expected for an example of this age. The watch and bracelet present in excellent condition; the box condition is disclosed transparently rather than photographed to hide it. Buyers who prioritise box condition are advised to review the provided photographs closely.
What is the difference between the Rolex GMT-Master II 116710LN and the 116710BLNR? Both references share the same 40mm Oystersteel case, Calibre 3186 movement, and Oyster bracelet. The key difference is the bezel and GMT hand colour. The 116710BLNR (“Batman”) has a two-tone black-and-blue Cerachrom bezel to distinguish night (black) from day (blue) and a standard luminous GMT hand. The 116710LN has an all-black Cerachrom bezel and uses a bright green arrow-tipped GMT hand as the colour distinguisher. The LN is considered the cleaner, more understated of the two references.
What does “LN” stand for in the Rolex 116710LN? LN refers to the all-black (“Lunettes Noires” or black bezel in French) Cerachrom ceramic bezel insert. It distinguishes this reference from the 116710BLNR (black and blue bezel) and earlier aluminium-bezel variants.
What movement does the Rolex GMT-Master II 116710LN use? The 116710LN is powered by Rolex Calibre 3186 — a self-winding in-house movement with a Parachrom Blue paramagnetic hairspring, Paraflex shock absorption, and Superlative Chronometer certification (±2 seconds per day). The 3186 was replaced by the Calibre 3285 in the successor reference 126710LN from 2019 onwards, which added approximately 70 hours of power reserve. The 3186 remains a proven, reliable movement.
Is a 2016 Rolex GMT-Master II 116710LN a good buy? Yes — for several reasons. The 116710LN had a 12-year production run (2007–2019), giving it a solid track record. The Cerachrom bezel is scratch-proof and UV-stable for life, so it will look as good in another decade as it does today. The reference was discontinued in 2019 and replaced by the 126710LN; the 116710LN now commands a premium on the secondary market. A 2016 example in excellent condition with full set and a fully linked bracelet represents the reference at its best.
Why is a fully linked bracelet important? Many pre-owned sports Rolex watches have had links removed to fit a smaller wrist, which limits future adjustment options and affects bracelet presentation. A fully linked bracelet means all original Oyster links are present — the buyer can adjust the bracelet across the full intended range and the watch presents as Rolex intended. This is noted in the title and listing because it is not guaranteed on the secondary market.
What water resistance does the 116710LN have? The GMT-Master II 116710LN is rated to 100 metres / 10 bar. The screw-down crown and caseback contribute to this rating. It is suitable for swimming and surface water activities but is not rated for scuba diving.
What condition are the boxes in? The watch and bracelet present in excellent condition. The original Rolex boxes show staining and aging consistent with a 2016 example — this is disclosed transparently. The boxes are original Rolex packaging and complete the full set for resale value and provenance. Buyers are encouraged to review the provided photographs of the packaging closely before purchase.
